Ever thought that an advanced computer could solve in seconds what our own computer takes years to do? Welcome to the quantum era— Spain has officially just entered the chat.

In February 2025, the BSC (Barcelona Supercomputing Center)  proudly showcased Spain’s first-ever quantum computerA significant technological advance milestone. The Quantum Spain initiative, developed using European technology, aims to promote open science in Spain by providing tech sovereignty. The project was funded with over €9 million from the Quantum Spain initiative to provide a broader claim to technological authority.

What is a Quantum Computer, you ask? 

You have a great question. I’d like you to think of a computer as a library. It would quickly read through books, one at a moment, in order to search for answers. Imagine the same process for a quantum computing device, with only one difference. It opens All the books are available at once. It can be used to process data in mind-blowing ways. Einstein called it “spooky actions at a distance.” Think AI & Quantum are the same thing? Think AI & Quantum are the same thing? 

Why Spain Now? 

This wasn’t just a vanity project. Spain is well-versed in the tech scene— and Barcelona in particular has promoted a fusion of World-class research, a Pool of talent, Cultural magnetism, and EU tech funding. Now a Quantum Leap. April 2025 Update

The machine is now available for use. Companies & researchers from across Spain can now submit projects to access the system. The first round closes on May 8, with the chosen candidates gaining access in early August via the RES.  This tells us that in a few months, we will likely see early quantum-backed breakthroughs from both Spanish start-ups & labs. Quantum computing won’t just be a science experiment, but it will have real-world impacts across a variety of industries including:

 It is possible to create a more accurate model of Earth’s climate by processing massive amounts data and running simulations. This will allow for better predictions as the Earth’s temperature changes over time.  If 2024 was a year of AI, then 2025 will be the year of quantum computing – and Spain is laying out the red carpet right now.
