Malaga’s patios: the spring event most tourists miss

Malaga patios: The spring event that many tourists miss

The majority of visitors to Malaga are drawn straight to the historic centre, port or beaches. But just beyond the busy tourist spots lies a unique event that many don’t know about – Patio Week in Malaga, taking place this year from 6 to 10 May.

Corralones are beautifully decorated courtyards that can be found in La Trinidad, El Perchel and other neighbourhoods. The patios in these neighbourhoods are not the large, noble courtyards found in Cordoba or Seville. These patios are full of colour, life and community spirit. Think of potted plants and flamenco shawls. Photos, fans, and residents who are happy to show off their community.

Originally built in the 19th century for Malaga‘s working class, these shared housing blocks are centred around a communal patio. The patio was once the hub of everyday life and is still so today.

Patio Week is a unique opportunity for visitors to discover a more authentic Malaga. You can explore around 25 patios, take part in free tours, and enjoy live music, performances, and local food at the Corralón de Santa Sofia, the main festival hub on Calle Montes de Oca.

This is the perfect place to begin if you want to see Malaga as a local. This is a charming, off-the-beaten-path location that’s easy to get to from the centre of the city.
