Ovidiu’s experience might inspire anyone who is considering making the leap to Spain from Romania. After more than two decades living in Spain – mostly in northern Burgos – Ovidiu recently moved again, this time to be closer to family, in southern Manilva.
He adds, “I have lived in Spain since 23 years.” “I spent the most time in Burgos.” A year and a quarter ago, he moved to be close to his loved ones. “I moved here [Manilva] He explains that he wants to be close to his family.
Romanians in Spain
Ovidiu, who now works in renovations and home maintenance work, says that his job keeps both him and others busy. Even though he has settled into his new life, he misses certain aspects of home. He says that in Romania “the working conditions and salary” were better.
Spain offers a great deal. Ovidiu highlights two factors that are often at the top of the list for expats who relocate to Spain: “I like both the culture and the climate.” The fact that family is now nearby has made a huge difference.
How about that infamous Spanish bureaucracy? Ovidiu is surprised to find it manageable. He says, “Very well,” in a simple tone.
Integration was also no problem. It didn’t take him long to overcome the challenges of learning Spanish, even though he has “friends from different nationalities.” “At first I was struggling, but spending time with Spanish speakers made it a lot easier.”
Interestingly, both Spanish and Romanian are part of a family of languages known as ‘romance languages’ – their Latin origin means they have a lot of similarities. My husband is Romanian and he picked up Spanish much easier than me. This is my excuse, anyway!
Ovidiu fixed our wobbly toilet that was not sealed in the rental apartment we rent. He did an excellent job. Ovidiu is available for home renovations and maintenance via Facebook or WhatsApp.
