A British mother’s dream holiday turned into a nightmare when she gave birth prematurely outside a Torremolinos hotel during a town-wide blackout — and now her newborn son is fighting for his life in intensive care.

Around 3 AM, Monday (April 28,) a power outage plunged the entire town into darkness.

Thirty weeks into her pregnancy, the young woman — believed to be in her twenties — suddenly went into labour, ten weeks early, while she and her partner were on holiday. They rushed to the lobby of their hotel for help, as they had no time to waste.

Arturo was a hotel employee on night duty when he found himself in a situation that few could have imagined. Spanish radio broadcaster SER Málaga, sources confirmed that Arturo immediately dialled for an ambulance — but emergency services were overwhelmed and communication was patchy due to the blackout.

Arturo, who was unable to find an ambulance because the baby was already “crowning”, had no other choice than to assist in the birth.

‘The head was already crowning,’ he later said, describing the heart-stopping moment he stepped in to help the mother deliver her baby — without lights, without doctors, and with no time for hesitation.

The baby was born in the garden of the hotel. Tragically, the baby showed signs of asphyxia. It turned purple.

Arturo, following urgent instructions over the telephone, performed CPR maneuvers until, miraculously the baby began to cough.

Emergency crews finally arrived minutes later, carrying the mother and her fragile newborn into an ambulance — escorted by police — and raced them to Málaga’s Materno Infantil Hospital.

While the mother’s condition is said to be stable, the little one — born more than two months early — remains critically ill in intensive care.

The scenes of horror this morning were confirmed by a regional emergency services spokesperson, who revealed:

“A British woman gave birth to a premature baby near the reception of the Puente Real hotel in Torremolinos during the early hours — right in the middle of the blackout chaos sweeping the Spanish mainland.”

The article continued: “The receptionist assisted the mother by performing CPR on her newborn baby who at the time had no pulse. As her waters were already broken, the woman was in labor when she arrived at reception. The receptionist called a taxi to bring her there and notified emergency services but she didn’t have enough time.

The couple spent several days at the Puente real before their vacation turned into a struggle for survival.

The blackout was part of an even larger power outage that affected the Costa del Sol. It added a terrifying twist to a situation already dangerous.

Doctors in the Hospital Materno Infantil Hospital are now doing everything they can to stabilise the little fighter — born not just before time, but under the most unimaginable circumstances.
