The Spanish central government has approved a new tender for Imserso, a subsidised holiday scheme that offers affordable travel to retired individuals. The flat rate this year for pensioners with lower incomes is 50 euros.
According to the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2020, Imserso reserves 7,447 spaces for people who receive an amount equal or lower than the non-contributory pensions of disability or retirement of the Social Security.
Minister Pablo Bustinduy said, “For the very first time, the user will only pay 50 euros, irrespective of the destination. Imserso covers the rest of the cost.” Imserso will be able to allow users of the new tender to travel along with their pets.
There are some fine print details, however. The rate is dependent on the booking season. 100 Euro will be added to the package price in May, October and June. In December, January and february, this also applies to Canary Islands. It does not affect the pensioners who receive the lowest amounts.
In order to avoid the system becoming clogged, the companies awarded “will be required to distribute 36% each of the seats of each lot in a proportional manner, each month during the travel campaign”, according to the conditions. A larger budget will also be allocated to them. Sanctions are applied in cases where the Imserso quality standards are not met.
Imserso requires that hotel partners have at least three stars. In addition, the hotels are required to offer leisure and educational activities related to active ageing or elder abuse.
