The president has been widely criticized for his slow response to the floods of October 29.
Included in the hostile messages: “We will take his life.”
Another threat suggested that Mazon should be shot between his eyebrows and that anybody standing by him would ‘pay as well’.
Mazon complained to police after receiving messages on his official Instagram account.
Policia Nacional has not ruled out additional arrests in relation to other malicious posts on social media.
Miguel Barrachina said, “Those who use tragedies such as ours to intoxicate people with hate and threats deserve our full condemnation.”
Mazon’s visit to the Magdalena fiestas at Castellon, Spain was cut short last Thursday because of security concerns following several protests.
The Valencian Partido Popular accused opposition parties of ‘crossing the line’ with their campaign against the regional leader.
It also demanded that the Government delegate in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabe, ‘comply, stop these attacks and guarantee the safety’ of the president.
Bernabe, in his turn, promised last week that he would work as a government representative to maintain the security of all environments where President Mazon was.
