Caminito del Rey will be celebrating its 10th birthday on March 28th, 2025. To celebrate, a project to expand the Caminito del Rey is being launched in Malaga Province. It includes Spain’s longest pedestrian suspended bridge.

The 110-metre-long bridge, not for the faint of heart, is part of an alternative route, and a new exit, in the final stretch, of the vertiginous walk, that aims to improve safety around the iron railway bridge, and El Chorro Tunnel. Construction began Saturday and will continue until November.

The bridge, costing €1.25 million from Caminito’s self-generated funds, will hang 50 metres over the canyon, weigh 17 tonnes, and feature a 7.5 per cent downward slope. The bridge will be made of wood and metal, with mesh railings that mirror the existing walkways. The entire structure will be 38 tonnes. The descent will be shortened by almost a kilometre with a conditioned trail. However, the original route is still available.

Diputación de Málaga President Francisco Salado laid the first stone alongside regional and local officials, calling it ‘a fitting anniversary celebration’. The project, informed by geological studies from the universities of Granada and Jaén, prioritises visitor safety and sustainable development.

Caminito is already equipped with emergency features such as a helipad and first aid kits. It also has seven defibrillators. This makes it Spain’s very first cardio-insured path. Salado celebrated that the bridge was a stunning addition to this environmentally-conscious landmark, assuring its legacy as a beautiful and safe destination.
