Eurostat’s latest data shows that the average life expectancy for a child born in Europe (EU) is now 81.4 years.

This is a rise of 0.8 years from 2022, and it exceeds the pre-pandemic level. The COVID-19-induced decline in life expectancy from 2020 to 2021 has now been reversed, with a 3.8-year increase.

Where in Europe are the people living longest?

The highest birth-to-death life expectancy in the EU is 86.1 years for Comunidad de Madrid, Spain. Other regions with high longevity include Provincia Autonoma di Trento in Italy and Åland in Finland (both at 85.1 years), as well as Comunidad Foral de Navarra in Spain and Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano/Bozen in Italy (85 years).

It seems that Spain is doing the right thing for its elderly. Maybe the pensions will be a great help. Spain’s pension system was recently recognized as one of Europe’s most generous.

Where in Europe is the life expectancy lowest?

Three Bulgarian regions recorded the lowest EU life expectancy: Severozapaden, Severen-tsentralen and Yugoiztochen. Other regions with lower life expectancy include Észak-Magyarország in Hungary (74.9 years) and Mayotte in France (74.9 years).

EU women have a longer life expectancy than men

Eurostat data highlights a gender gap in the life expectancy of women. Women in the EU will have an average life expectancy (in 2023) of 84.0, compared with 78.7 for men. Women are expected to have a life expectancy of 5.3 years more than men by 2023.

The biggest differences were found in Latvia (where men live 10.2 years longer than women), followed by Lithuania (9.0 year) and Estonia 8.8 years. The Netherlands, Sweden and Luxembourg had the smallest gaps between men and women.
