Two young hikers from La Línea de la Concepción, aged 22 and 24, were safely rescued at dawn after losing their way while descending La Concha Peak in Marbella’s Sierra Blanca.
The Marbella Fire Department completed a nearly 10-hour rescue mission that ended successfully and without injury, according to the statement of the Marbella City Council.
The pair had reached the summit via the Istán trail on Saturday but veered off route during their descent, ending up in a hard-to-traverse area. They called 112 as night fell and the fire department responded quickly. Six firefighters were dispatched, split into two groups and sent across the difficult terrain at night.
In the early morning hours, a group found the hikers near a dangerous spot. A second group of three people joined in to guide the two hikers back on a safer path. The hikers, tired and cold, were uninjured.
A council spokesperson thanked the firefighters for their bravery, noting the dangers of the terrain which can catch hikers unawares. They were relieved that they had made it safely to one of Marbella’s most iconic natural landmarks.
Marbella’s Fire Department urges hikers to stay on marked trails in daylight and carry the right gear.
