Spanish tourists drive growth in Malaga hotels – but total stays take a dip.

Malaga hotels offer a variety of accommodation options. The kick-off 2025 with a strong showing, thanks to a rise in Spanish tourists – but the total number of overnight stays has dipped compared to last year.
According to the National Statistics Institute in Spain (INE), 113.060 hotel guests checked into accommodation in Madrid during January. This amounted to 226,526 total overnight stays. While domestic tourism is growing, the numbers indicate that international travel is also on the rise. The rise of the ‘on-the-rise’The overall figures for January 2024 have been slightly lower.

In-country tourism grew by 4.23% in comparison to the previous year. In January of 2024, Malaga hosted 49,223 visitors from Spain. This year that number has increased to 51,305. The number of overnight stays for Spanish tourists has increased by 1.03 percent, from 80.543 to 81.373 nights.

With 8,394 British tourists staying 23,392 nights, the UK is Malaga’s largest international market. The average Briton stayed in Malaga for 2.79 nights, the longest stay of any guest. This was followed by the Germans (2.77) and the Dutch (2.67).
Italian Market Followed In terms of France was the second largest country in terms of visitors, with 4,855 guests arriving, while Canada sent 4,167.

Malaga is known for its high occupancy rates. Malaga recorded the highest occupancy rate of any Spanish city with more than 500 000 residents at 66.81%. This puts it in front of Madrid (64.35%), Seville (64.17%), Barcelona (63.98%), Valencia (63.40%) and Zaragoza (50.19%).
With Spanish tourists on the rise and Brits still sticking around the longest, Malaga’s hotels remain a hot spot – even if the total numbers aren’t quite what they were last year.
