According to a new Danish study, men with better sperm may live longer.

Researchers examined data from nearly 80.000 Danish men over 50 years, and found an important correlation between longevity and semen quality (Human Reproduction, 2025).

Life expectancy and sperm-quality

The study examined men who underwent semen analysis because of fertility concerns. Semen volume, sperm count, motility and shape were all key factors.

Men with motile sperm counts greater than 120 million live, on average 2.7 years longer, than men with counts between 0-5 million.

The lower the semen’s quality, the lower life expectancy. This association was not explained by any diseases in the ten years before semen quality assessment or the men’s educational level,” said Dr Lærke Priskorn, senior researcher from Copenhagen University Hospital (cited by Euronews.)

Semen as a possible health indicator for men

Scientists have suggested that semen could be used as a marker of health. Some people believe that sperm’s quality should be recognized as a sixth essential sign along with temperature, heartbeat, respiration rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation.

Prior research has already linked poor sperm concentration with earlier hospitalisation – by an average of seven years – suggesting a broader impact on men’s wellbeing, beyond fertility.

The findings of this study confirm the research that has been done in the past and show that the quality of semen is a good indicator of health. It can also be used to predict future health. Euronews).

The study has not identified a direct cause of the link, but environmental influences could play a significant role.

The findings emphasize the importance of reproductive and general health.

A study reveals that global sperm health has declined in the last few decades. It highlights the need to raise awareness. The study suggests that routine semen analyses could be a better way to assess men’s health. study.
