The Regional Government of Andalusia has commenced a €2.6 million project to seal the inert waste landfill in Albox. This project, which is co-financed by FEDER under the framework 2021-2027, aims at rehabilitating industrial areas and contaminated lands.
Catalina Garcia, regional Minister for Sustainability & Environment, visited site to mark the commencement of works. She stressed the government’s commitment towards sustainable waste management and improving environmental conditions in Albox.
€2.6m investment to restore Albox landfill in major environmental push.
The Albox landfill, covering over five hectares—approximately the size of five football fields—has been a significant environmental concern. The European Commission has been investigating this site due to its unregulated waste disposal. The Andalusian Government has responded by prioritising the restoration of the environment in degraded areas. This is to ensure public safety and prevent ecological damage.
The project awarded in November is expected to be finished within 24 months. The Albox Town Council, upon completion of the project, will supervise a long term monitoring plan lasting 30 years. Sealing will improve environmental safety, by removing potential pollution sources and encouraging ecosystem regeneration. The process involves planting over 30,000 plants native to the area, including espartograss, rosemary, and Thyme. Other measures include installing perimeter fencing to prevent unauthorized access and building drainage systems to manage surface runoff.
This initiative is part of the broader Plan Integral de Residuos de Andalucía (PIREC 2030), (Comprehensive Waste Plan), reflecting the government’s dedication to sustainable development and environmental conservation.
