Fuengirola Museum presents Surrealism and Lowbrow Art – Costa News Spain

The works of world-famous Surrealist Pop artist Mark Ryden are on show at the Fuengirola Museum in the exhibition ‘Surrealism Pop & Lowbrow Art’ from March 14.

The exhibit includes more than 200 works and features six other artists from the Lowbrow Movement, including Ryden, Todd Schorr and Marion Peck. Also included are Robert Williams, RK Sloane, Frank Kozic and EMEK.

On weekends, you can also visit it in the morning from 10am-2pm. It is free to enter. Antonella Motinaro, the curator of the exhibition, explains that many of these artists from the Lowbrow movement ‘are mainly self-taught and work in graphic design, especially designing album covers, although they encompass quite a few other areas. Surrealism, as well as Pop Art, is a strong presence in their works.”

Mark Ryden is probably the most well-known of them all. He began his career as an artist in the commercial art field, designing album covers for artists like Michael Jackson and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Ses works are characterized by an unusual mixture of elements – from references to classic artists such as Ingres or David to pop culture elements – combining the childish to the disturbing. Ses recurring themes are meat, trees and bees. He also uses rabbits and Abraham Lincoln.

Fuengirola Museum is in Plaza de España 1. Entrance is free. The exhibition will open on Friday, 14 March and run until 10 May.
