Spain has become first country to introduce the V-16 emergency lighting system, replacing the traditional triangles.

This compact yellow beacon emits 360-degree flashing lights and is connected to the DGT platform 3.0, which provides real-time updates on location to improve road safety. The V-16 device is activated within the vehicle to reduce the risks associated with placing warning triangulars on the road. From 1 January 2026, all vehicles in Spain must carry this device; failure to comply may result in a fine of up to €200.

One more step to safer roads

In accordance with the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic has clarified that vehicles registered and registered in Spain may use the V-16 device while travelling abroad. Foreign vehicles entering Spain can continue to use the approved warning devices of their home country. Visit the for more information. DGT’s official website.
