The Huercal-Overa Ayuntamiento, in collaboration with Gestion de Aguas del Levante Almeriense(Galasa), inaugurated the new Estacion Depuradora de Aguas Residuales EDAR in El Saltador.
This plant replaces the old one, which was decommissioned following the 2012 floods. It represents an investment in the amount of 450,000 Euros. The money is funded by the canon de depuracion levy collected by Junta de Andalucia.
The project is part of a larger initiative of the Consejeria de Agricultura, Pesca, Agua y Desarrollo Rural to improve the municipal infraestructura de saneamiento. The comprehensive plan includes the construction of treatment plants in Huercal-Overa and the poligono industrial (industrial estate), as well as a network of collectors connecting outlying districts to the main sewage system.
The new EDAR, designed as a modular facility (planta), can process 100 cubic metres per day of wastewater. It features a sistema de pretratamiento compacto (compact pre-treatment system), a tanque de homogeneizacion (homogenisation tank), and an advanced Reactor Biologico Secuencial (SBR) (Sequential Batch Reactor) for efficient biological treatment. A sludge-thickener is also installed to optimize waste management.
Alcalde (Mayor) Domingo Fernandez emphasised the significance of this development, stating, ‘The commissioning of the EDAR de El Saltador (El Saltador EDAR) is a crucial step forward in our municipality’s water management. This new facility will ensure sustainable wastewater treatment and meet the current and future needs for our residents.
This improvement marks a significant advancement in Huercal-Overa’s sewage infrastructure. It ensures effective and sustainable wastewater treatments for the city’s residents.
