The Guardia Civil is said to have located the body of a man next to a bicycle near Peña del Olivar, in Jaén, which, although yet to be confirmed, could well be the missing 50-year-old American cyclist Matt Opperman, who has not been seen since January 24.

Since several days, searches have been conducted for the man who, after many years of living in Churriana Malaga, was last seen on his mountain bicycle heading towards Sierra de Segura. It was only on February 6 that an investigation into the man’s whereabouts began.

Friends and volunteers on Opperman’s trail alerted Guardia Civil when they discovered a body. The remains’ identity will not be known until after an autopsy.

Friends and Guardia Civil have mobilised to search for him on social media. The friends of the missing man did not hold out much hope that he would be found alive but they refused to give up on their search.
