Mayor of Mijas, Ana Mata, has pledged to get works on the new sports centre, or ‘Ciudad de Deportes’, in Las Lagunas de Mijas up and running again, and the works finished by summer 2025.
Construction of the full-sized Olympic swimming pool has been halted for 5 years because the original contractor was unable to meet the requirements.
Now, the council has, in Mata’s words, ‘decided to take the bull by the horns’ and kick-start the failed plan by putting the project out to tender again. The council plans to get the construction completed ‘as soon as possible.’ After almost six years of expansion, the works were suspended in February 2021 because of various issues relating to regulations. In January 2023, the work was restarted through a temporary joint-venture, but the companies again began to slow the pace. Ana Mata, after 6 years of frustration has finally had enough. Finding a company that can complete the project by 2025 is the next step.
The expansion includes the creation of a new sports hall, a therapeutic pool, and a children’s area, involving a council investment of €4.3 million. The mayor said that the original version of the project failed to take into consideration the necessary protection and repairs to bring the existing facilities up-to-date, which she blames the previous administration for.
