Marbella Carnival kicks off three weeks of street partying – Costa News Spain

In Costa del Sol, February is carnival season. While most places celebrate Lent with a few days of celebration, Andalusia has far too much for one weekend.

Marbella is hosting a 3 week long event with tons of dressing up events. From Saturday, February 15 until Saturday, march 8 there is a packed programme of events.

As the main novelty this year, the opening day, February 15, has been moved to the Adolfo Suárez Congress Centre. It was held at the municipal theatre until now.

The Debra Piel de Mariposa charity will receive all proceeds starting at 9pm. The festival will feature a number of spectacular ceremonies including the introductions of Venus, Nymphs, and God Momo. There will also be a night with Chirigotas performing funny songs mocking politicians and recent events.

Marbella’s carnival troupes will display their colorful costumes, floats, carefully rehearsed displays, and parades.

Carnival ‘peñas’ (clubs) have been preparing for the last 51 weeks of the year for this moment, and this year looks like it will be bigger than ever and well worth joining in the party. Each day there will be traffic disruptions and overcrowded busses as the entire city descends upon the centre to celebrate one of the largest street festivals of the year.

From February 19-21, the Palacio De Congresos will host the Chirigotas children’s contest. At Dam Park, on February 23, at 12pm, there will be a competition for children with Venus, Nymph and God Momo serving as judges. There will also be trampolines, entertainment and other surprises.

The fun doesn’t stop here. On Friday 28 at 1pm the programming will resume with the Chorizada. The event is a traditional one where kids can have fun in a variety of bouncy houses and rides while adults enjoy free grilled Chorizo on the Plaza El Triana.

All proceeds will go to the Debra charity. From Monday March 3 until Thursday March 6, the Marbella Theatre is the venue for the Carnival Groups Competition. And on Saturday March 7, it will be back to the Marbella Theatre again. And then on March 8, the ‘Humour Parade’ which leaves at 5pm from Avenida Ricardo Soriano and ends on Avenida Nabeul.
