Plans for a major new Malaga hospital have been approved finally after almost two decades of delays. The project, which will bring a third large hospital to the city, is now moving forward with a construction budget of €607 million.

The new hospital is located adjacent to the Hospital Civil, and it’s expected to be finished by 2032. It will have 815 hospital beds, a modern emergency room, and more than 150 medical specialist consultation rooms. The hospital will have 80 intensive care beds and 48 operating rooms, as well as dedicated teaching and research spaces.

The project, which has been in the works for a long time, aims to solve the severe shortage of hospital beds and space for healthcare in the city. Since 2007, the plans have been altered many times. The original designs were cheaper and smaller, but in the end the design will be the largest health centre in southern Spain.

A mixed-funding model will be used to reduce the pressure on regional budgets. The future builder will be able to profit from the parking lots at the hospital. The carparks will be able to accommodate more than 1,700 cars.

Residents of Malaga have been waiting a long while for improved healthcare services. If all goes according to schedule, the new facility will be fully operational within seven years.
