Julio Rodríguez is a 16-year-old boy from Adamuz who was returning from a day of fishing with his mother and a friend on Sunday evening, when they saw two police cars and an ambulance – an unprecedented sight in their municipality. They followed the convoy at first, initially moved by curiosity. It led them to the disaster train that had occurred near a Cordoba Province station.
Julio, on arrival, saw disoriented and injured passengers trying to escape the train through the doors and windows. Julio, a 16-year old boy, followed his instincts and was one of the first to reach carriages 1, 2 and 3 of the Alvia train. The train had rolled down a 4-metre slope and ground zero for the accident.
Julio was able to save several people by the time the emergency teams arrived. He recorded the names and phone numbers of his relatives.
“I didn’t think about whether I was tired.” The young man replied, “I have made the journey many times.” Julio described the feeling at that moment, not as just fear but “terror”.
