10 new car safety systems are now the law – and most people don’t know

A new report by RACE – that’s Spain’s answer to the AA – has revealed that most drivers have no idea that a host of safety systems are already mandatory.

There is a knowledge gap the size of an autobahn

A survey of more than 1,000 motorists revealed that 66% could not name any safety systems now required by law in all new EU registered vehicles. Only 34% said they’d even heard of the system. Hearing Tech. That’s not just a blind spot – it’s a motorway-sized knowledge gap.

40% of drivers don’t even have these systems in their cars – mostly because they’re still clinging on to older models.

Prepare yourself for a smorgasbord of acronyms. From July 2024 onwards, all new cars sold in the EU will be fitted with ten of these features. ADAS As standard, (Advanced Driving-Assistance Systems) gadgets are available:

  1. AEB (Emergency Braking) – Slams the brakes before you do, dodging accidents with cars… and soon, cyclists and pedestrians too.
  2. LKA (Lane Keep Assist) – Gently nudges you back in line if you start drifting like a drowsy Formula 1 driver.
  3. RCTA (Rear Cross Traffic Alert) – Because reversing out of a parking space shouldn’t feel like Russian roulette.
  4. ISA (Intelligent Speed Assist) – Reads speed signs and can slow you down.
  5. DDR (Driver Drowsiness Detection) – Picks up on yawns, swerves, and micro-nods – and nags accordingly.
  6. SBR (Seatbelt Reminder) – Tells backseat passengers to buckle up. No excuses.
  7. EDR (Black Box) – Records your every move before, during, and after a crash. Beware of insurance fraudsters.
  8. Alcolock Interface – No breathalyser installed yet, but your car’s ready for one. Pub crawlers, be aware.
  9. ESS (Emergency Stop Signal) – Makes your brake lights flash if you slam on the anchors.
  10. TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring) – Alerts you if your tyres are low – crucial for fuel efficiency and grip.

They’re no longer optional gimmicks. These are legally required under EU RegulationThe manufacturers are under pressure to adhere to this rule or else face penalties.

Connectivity: A double edged dashboard

On the topic of connected cars – those constantly pinging real-time updates about traffic, petrol stations and weather – 78% agree this tech makes roads safer, and 76% reckon it improves traffic flow.

There is a 65% concern that Big Brother will be riding shotgun. They are also concerned about the use of their personal information and if current laws will protect them.
