AutoTrader states that British drivers have a reputation for adhering to road rules. They also exhibit a high level of courtesy by signaling well in advance or allowing other vehicles to merge.
According to the study, cultural factors, strict regulations for driving, and attitudes toward politeness in a country may all contribute to its overall driving friendliness.
How was the AutoTrader study on “friendly drivers” conducted?
AutoTrader explained that their research used the ‘Agreeableness’ section of the Big 5 Personality Test, stating, “We asked drivers to self-report how nice they are, according to statements from the ‘Agreeableness’ section of the Big 5 Personality Test, as well as asking drivers whether they’ve ever exhibited uncourteous driving behaviour.” The study then calculated a ‘Friendly Driving Score’ for each country. The drivers gave a biased view of their friendliness.

Why are UK drivers so friendly towards each other?
AutoTrader noted, “The UK’s comprehensive driving tests and the emphasis on lane discipline may contribute to these ‘friendly’ traits – moreover, cultural values around politeness and a ‘keep calm’ attitude likely play a role in creating a nation with a super cooperative driving culture.”
Portugal was highlighted as the friendliest EU Country in the study. “Portugal’s investments in modern road infrastructure, traffic management systems, and other technologies have created a less stressful experience while driving, creating goodwill among motorists.”
The study suggests that areas with well-developed roads, efficient traffic management and less congestion may have fewer incidents of road rage. This could lead to a more pleasant driving culture.
Spain is among the 10 friendliest countries for driving
Spain came in ninth place, and AutoTrader said, “While Spanish Drivers can be assertive but they are known for their willingness help others who are in need.” The relaxed lifestyle of the country and its focus on social relationships may encourage drivers to be cooperative and patient on the roads.
