San Luis castle, in Estepona, has revealed treasures that will make for an interesting visit and reveal the history of Estepona.
This coastal fortress, built at the end of the 16th Century in the historical context following the Moorish Rebellion of 1568, was designed to defend the West Coast of Malaga. The original purpose of this coastal fortress was to reinforce the southern wall of Islamic origin dominating the natural anchorage at La Rada Beach. The three artillery bastions, a large arcaded Parade with barracks and several barracks are its most notable elements.
The site has received more than 4,000 visitors within a month of its opening, according to the figures provided by the city council. Excavation and recovery work on this 16th century fortress has received 150 visitors per day. Nearly 50 percent of these were foreign tourists and residents.
The enclosure features a new glass pathway that allows visitors to more easily access the interior of this castle to view the various remains that were found during the archeological excavation. On display are also artillery ammunitions, religious items, ceramics and an old Spanish Civil War refuge.
Visit the Castle of San Luis from 10am-2pm on Monday through Friday and 5pm-8pm.
