End of January, work began on enclosing and protecting the Cerro del Espiritu Santo Hillside in Vera.
The site where Bayra was located before 1518, when it was destroyed in an earthquake.
The €300,000 project has been financed by Levante Tourism Sustainability, whose funds are administered by the Mancomunidad de Municipios de Levante, a group of 13 towns in the province’s eastern area,
Alfonso Garcia the mayor of Vera and Domingo Fernandez president of Mancomunidad visited the Cerro in the first phase to protect the site and make it more accessible both for locals as well as tourists.
The project is due to be finished by May of this year. It will allow archaeologists the opportunity to expand and continue their work on site.
“We’ve reached agreement with the Mancomunidad that it’s essential to enclose and protect Bayra, and we shall be able to do this thanks to the €300,000 received in funding” Garcia said.
He pointed out that this plan would also allow further research into Vera’s heritage and, at the same time, publicise and market the town.
