Tobi cannot bear to be separated from his owner, Luis Jorrín, who four years ago was admitted to the Fundación Residencia de Ancianos San Francisco, in Reinosa, Cantabria. Luis misses Tobi, his best friend.
Tobi, who had been following another old people’s home user, ran from his house a few weeks ago. He waited outside the building for Luis to come down and see him. They were then able to hug. Luis said, “He came to see me.”
Luis was forced to leave his home and wife Yoli. He visits them often. “When I visit my family, the dog does not leave my side. Since he was born, we have never been apart. He is always at my side. He misses me. Luis added, “I miss him too.”
He was by my side since the day he was born. Now he misses you”.
The black and white, nine-year old mongrel fled from home to search for Luis. Tobi was lucky to come across another San Francisco resident who was walking. He recognized her smell and followed her through an urban area with pedestrians and cars everywhere.
He kept his distance, said witnesses. “We think that the dog is familiar with the smells of the residence.” The woman had gone for a half-hour walk in the late afternoon, but by 6 o’clock that evening, the dog already sat waiting at the entrance, observing the electric doors which opened and closed automatically and people coming and going to the reception”, explained Virginia Arenal. A physiotherapist who worked at the residence, Virginia Arenal recognised Tobi, and told Yoli that the dog could be found. Arenal said that Yoli was looking for Tobi and was concerned.
Arenal knows Luis loves animals and spends much time with him doing rehab exercises. The health worker said that Luis has a deep affection for the animals. He is full of anecdotes, and he boasts how Tobi loves him and is a very good guardian. She said she believed that the loyalty of dogs towards their owners was “the purest love in the world”. Their loyalty did not depend on their mistakes or their successes. They were simply present and constant.
It’s the purest kind of love, and its loyalty doesn’t depend on whether you succeed or fail. It is just there, always.
Luis’ secret
When they told him that Tobi would be at the front door waiting for me, I got very excited. I was also concerned that he may have been hit by a car on his journey,” said Luis. He explained that as soon as his dog saw him, he “went crazy”, wagging its tail and licking his face. “Will I tell you something?” The octogenarian answered the phone. Sure. You can.
