We don’t just want homes that think – we want homes that know what we want before we do.
Move over WiFi bulbs and robot hoovers – Spain’s homes are going from clever to downright genius. It’s not just about telling Alexa to turn your kettle on anymore. No, the future of living is one where walls can change their appearance on command, your home can smell like an entire forest, and it runs itself.
Welcome to the age of intelligent living – where high-tech meets high comfort.
From lightbulbs and landscapes
Spanish Trade Magazine reports InfoConstruccion, With adaptive furniture, spatial computing and other technologies, residents won’t be bound to a single setup. You could transform your kitchen into a zen-inspired retreat or turn your bedroom into a rainforest spa. Also, they predict a revolution of building materials that will make homes lighter, greener and smarter.
Malaga’s housing high-tech meets low-income
Malaga is pulling off its own smart move while luxury lofts are going full Star Trek. The southern Spanish city is building the country’s first “smart city” of affordable rental homes – and it’s already 32 percent complete.
Backed by a €59.3 million investment from the ICO and Lagoom Living (via the EU’s Recovery and Resilience funds), Distrito Universidad will bring 530 smart rental homes to the Costa del Sol, with prices averaging €600 a month.
Forget dull concrete jungles. The flats were designed with social housing and sustainability at the forefront. Digital systems, shared spaces, and energy efficiency are built-in – not bolted on.
In 2026, the first tenants will move in in three phases: in February, in May and in June.
Spaniards ready to smarten up their homes: three out of four are already set to do so
It’s not just developers dreaming of gadget-filled pads – the public is on board, too. A recent report from UCI (Unión de Créditos Inmobiliarios) shows a whopping 74.5 percent of Spaniards are ready to invest in smart home tech.
It’s not just pocket money. The average Spaniard is prepared to splash €5,156.90 to smarten up their digs.
Top spenders include Aragonese (€6,478), Murcians (€6,353) and Galicians (€6,179).
Tighter purse strings can be found in Asturias (€2,338), Navarra (€2,440) and Cantabria (€2,880).
While the ambitions are high, only one out of five people would take a loan. Call it cautious optimism.
Battle of bulbs: the gadgets we love
What are the essentials for the Spanish smart home then? UCI data shows that smart plugs, smart switches, and smart thermostats are the most popular tech toys. These devices allow for remote control, and can help reduce energy costs.
Smart appliances, robot vacuums and security systems synced to your phone are next on the list. Also gaining popularity are motorised blinds, voice assistants, and door locks that you can control from your desk – or the beach.
Many fridges can now replenish themselves, and may even be able to judge the snack you choose. Who wouldn’t want to have a fridge that judges their snack choices?
The big picture: Tech that has a conscience
It’s not just toys for the tech-savvy. Spain’s smart homes movement is driven by efficiency, sustainability and accessibility.
The dream? A country of homes that are smarter, greener, safer, and more connected – without costing the Earth.
