A British insurer warned tourists in Spain to be vigilant of pickpockets – particularly when they are in busy places.

With Italy and France as well, this is one the most popular European holiday destinations for UK visitors. This makes it a prime target for thieves.

The main criminal activity in Europe is centered around Las Ramblas. Pickpockets are attracted to the street performers and the pedestrian area.

Sagrada Familia is another Barcelona location that has been targeted by thieves. Other locations include the Prado in Madrid and the Alhambra, both of which are frequented by tourists.

Statistics show that there are more women than men who pickpocket and they use children to get close to their victims.

To avoid being identified by security cameras, thieves often wear hoodies and scarves to conceal their identities.

They get very close to a target for a short time in order to determine if they are able or not.

Tourists should always be on the alert. If they are going out, it is recommended that they store their valuables in a safe at a hotel.

Money belts and crossbody bags with secure zips are recommended.
