Parents are arrested for ‘abandonment’ after their young son almost drowned in a communal swimming pool on Spain’s Costa Blanca

THE parents of a boy, 7, who nearly drowned at a communal swimming pool in San Juan de Alicante, have been arrested for child abandonment.

The family from Almeria were staying at the Adra urbanisation.

The youngster was playing with other children and went into the pool on Wednesday afternoon.

He was pulled out of the water by a lifeguard after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest.

His rescuer resuscitated the boy while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

Lifeguard, Jaime Sanchez Gonzalez, said: “I’d just started my shift and I saw a group of upset children who were trying to get somebody out of the pool.”

“It took 90 seconds to revive him as I asked some residents to call emergency services.”

The child was taken to the Hospital de Sant Joan.

Policia Nacional and Alicante Policia Local officers spoke to residents about the circumstances behind the incident and discovered the boy was not under parental supervision when he nearly died.

His father, 38, and mother, 29, were taken to a police station for questioning and will face a court hearing on a charge of temporarily abandoning a child.
