SPAIN has enjoyed another ‘warm’ winter according to the state weather forecaster, AemetThis forecast indicates a very high probability of mild weather in spring.
Early forecasts indicate that the coastal areas and islands will experience temperatures above average.
Aemet Ruben DelCampo, spokesperson for the Department of Public Works, stated on Tuesday that this winter is the seventh consecutive year in which temperatures have exceeded average.
From a meteorological standpoint, he said that the winter before had been characterized by a lack of cold spells.
Del Campo said that only one winter in the past 10 years was cold. The rest were warm or very hot. Since 1961, this is the first year in which a season has been warmer for seven consecutive years.
The average winter temperature was 7.8C. That’s 1.2C higher than the average. It was also the sixth warmest since 1961, and the fifth for the 21st century.
2017-18 was the only winter in recent memory that was warmer than average.
The period between February 9-22 was marked by a warm spell.
On December 15, La Palma Airport recorded the highest temperature of 28.8C. Murcia, on the Spanish mainland reached 28.1C in January.
Winter is dry in general, despite the recent rain. The average for mainland Spain is 145.9 litres/m2.
The winter of 2011 was the seventh driest in the 21st century and the 16th since 1961.
As for spring, Ruben Del Campo said that ‘no surprises are expected’ and suggested that there is between a 60% and 70% chance that it will be warmer than normal, especially in the Cantabrian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, and the islands.
Since 2018, the last year with a cold spring, temperatures in this season have consistently been higher than average.
