MARCH 2020 was the hottest recorded month in Europe. The average surface temperature was 6.03C, which is 2.41C warmer than the average March temperatures between 1991-2020.
The average global temperature was 14.06C. This is just a few degrees behind March 2024.
Samantha Burgess of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts said, “March 2025 will be the warmest month in Europe. This shows that temperatures are continuing to break records.”

Aside from the high temperatures that were unusually high, rain patterns across Europe also exhibited a great deal of irregularity.

While certain regions in Europe experienced the driest month on record (especially Western Europe), others such as Spain France and Italy saw heavy rains.
Spain in particular recorded its wettest march in 47 years.
Burgess stated that “March was an extreme month for rainfall across Europe. Some areas had their driest ever March, while others experienced the wettest rain in the past 47 years.”

In addition to Europe, high temperatures were recorded across the Arctic, Asia and North America.
Temperatures in parts of eastern Canada, Siberia and Russia were below average.
The warming trend extended to the oceans as well, with the average global sea surface temperature reaching 20.96C – the second highest ever recorded.
