On Tuesday, he was arrested while staying with his girlfriend at an Airbnb apartment in Braga.
Smyth- from County Antrim- appeared before the Guimarães Court of Appeal on Thursday where he said he would not oppose the extradition warrant.
After the hearing he was returned to custody. Extradition is expected take about a week.
Smyth’s detention came following ‘tenacious’ investigative work done by his family.
John George’s body was discovered in Rojales near Torrevieja on the 7th of January, close to a main road.
The 37-yearold was stripped naked, stabbed in his legs and then shot.
John’s relatives reported his disappearance in mid-December. He had been on vacation to Cabo Roig, on the Orihuela Costa.
After the police did little, the family conducted their own investigation and found two suspects from Northern Ireland.
Kevin Winters said, “over a month ago, the family received important information that pointed to the possible location in Braga of two suspects.”
“That information was immediately passed to the authorities.”
On January 10, a Torrevieja judge released the only other person arrested in connection with this killing. He was a 32 year old Czech citizen.
He was informed he was under investigation as an alleged co-conspirator.
