Google Discover, the personalised content feed normally seen on mobile devices, has quietly begun rolling out to desktop users this May – starting with Australia and New Zealand.

The new feature, which is expected to debut at the Google I/O Conference 2025 that begins today on Monday, May 20th, 2025, will include a curated feed of articles, sports results, weather updates and more.

What is Google Discover?

Google Discover is an personalised newsfeed that provides articles, videos and updates based upon what you are interested in. You don’t need to search anything.

It was only available until now on Android smartphones, tablets and the Google Mobile App. This is changing as users from Australia and New Zealand are reporting that the feed appears directly on google.com.

Google Discover Desktop Version: How it looks and feels

The desktop version is a bit different. Instead of the mobile version where the feed dominates, it sits below the Google Search bar. It includes:

  • Each story is represented by a square thumbnail on the left.
  • This is a brief text preview of the article.
  • Customisable Categories, such as Financial Services, Sports. Weather
  • The settings menu (three vertical dots), which allows you to tune your feed

According to IT Community, Chromebooks have been used by users in Ukraine to access the site. Online screenshots show a compact interface that is more clean than the mobile version.

Why online news is important for the average user

This update might change the way that you get your news and information from your computer. Google Discover lets you quickly scan relevant content without having to rely on social media or bookmarks. You can find the latest headlines in news, or your favorite football team’s scores, as well as personal finance tips, videos that are trending, and tech reviews. All your information will be in one location, and automatically customized to suit your needs.

Although there is no date set for a worldwide rollout, signs indicate that a wider release will occur in the near future. Google confirmed that the feature is being expanded, but some English-speaking US users are not yet seeing it.

Google I/O Conference 2025 may reveal more. Google’s Search Central Live in Madrid event last month stated that the company was expanding Discover. The quiet desktop launch appears to be a part of this plan.

What about the content producers and online news publishers

This is a huge deal for those who run websites or blogs. Google Discover has a reputation for driving huge traffic to mobile optimised sites. The feed is now available for desktop users. It’s a great opportunity to reach more people, as search behaviours are changing, and AI-generated summary reduces traditional clicks.

Some may prefer the clean look of a Google homepage that only shows search results, but others will enjoy having relevant content at their fingertips. This may be difficult to adjust to at first, but those who like curated content and don’t want the social media noise could find this a welcome change.

It’s still worth noting that, if you want to, you can customise the topics you don’t care about or turn them off, giving yourself some control.
