Spain has seen a dramatic increase in camping trips by individuals and families in motorhomes or vans.

Travelers who want to be in touch with nature rather than crowds and trendy locations are increasingly choosing this style of travel.  According to several reports, camping in the country increased by as much as 40% in 2024 when compared to 2023. This has led to the General Directorate of Traffic to strengthen its rules regarding where and how to sleep in vehicles.

The difference between sleeping inside a car and camping outside is one of the biggest questions camping enthusiasts ask. DGT officials say that sleeping in parked vehicles is legal as long as certain rules are adhered to, like parking the car correctly so as to not occupy more space than permitted. Some examples include leaving the door of the vehicle open, or placing a chair, cooler tent or shade outside.

Camping, on the other hand, requires more space to be occupied by tents and awnings. Set up chairs, tables and a kitchen.

Up to 600 euro fines in non-designated locations

If you camp in an area not specifically designated for camping or that isn’t allowed, you could be fined up to 600 euro.

This measure is intended to maintain natural spaces in designated areas for these types of travellers and preserve order.

RACE, the Royal Automobile Club of Spain, also offers advice. The consequences of not adhering to these regulations are severe. Many drivers believe that if they have valid insurance and an inspection sticker on their vehicle, they can park and sleep anywhere they like. However, this is not the case.

Baleares fines are more severe

Due to the increased tourist numbers, Balearic Islands fines for illegal campers start at 1,500 Euros.

There are exceptions that deserve to be noted. If the person is living in a vehicle because they are homeless, police might not impose a fine. Of course, they would need to have a valid social services letter.

There are many different rules that govern the use of campers, motorhomes and vans depending on where you live. What is legal in one area may be illegal in another. Check the DGT website For more information, please click here.
