After torrential rains, the A-7 road between Fuengirola Marbella has been ravaged by potholes and cracked.
The storms, which dumped up to 80 mm of rain, exposed one of the coastal road’s weakness – a sandy foundation that erodes under heavy water flow. It has caused uneven surfaces and flooded lanes. There have also been debris spills.
The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) reported temporary closures near Mijas earlier this month, and now similar issues plague this stretch. Local commuter María López said, ‘It’s like an obstacle course. Potholes cause the car to jolt, and water is everywhere. It is tempting to swerve when you see a pothole in front. This can increase the risk of a collision, especially at night, when they may appear at the last moment.
Potholes on roads require extra caution
While crews repair the holes, authorities urge caution. Driving Tips: Maintain distances between your vehicle and the one in front; slow down to spot hazards; keep extra distance from other cars; avoid puddles hiding potholes; use headlights for visibility; give motorcycles a wide berth; check tires for damage; or opt for the AP-7 toll road (€5.50-€8.90). Fuengirola’s council said that it is working to repair the roads, but for now drivers need to adapt their driving.
Sandy base of the A-7 is a challenge, especially with more rain expected. Commuters will have a bumpy ride until permanent fixes are made.
