A 34-year-old mountaineer was rescued from the Desfiladero de los Gatinates in Álora after a fall broke his leg on Friday, January 31.
Recent accidents have been a common occurrence. He was fortunate to not have died in this instance. According to 112 Andalusia, he was climbing along the vertical cliff edge of the Gaitanes gorge when he fell and got stuck in a section of difficult-to-reach rock. He could not pull himself out. This time, the man climbing alone was able call emergency services. After Guardia Civil mountain rescue was able to locate the injured man, they then transported him to the Hospital Clínico in Malaga.
The brush with death is just one of various climbing accidents in Álora in recent months. A woman died in a climbing accident on January 11th. Accident involving a 21-year-old Irishwoman took place near El Chorro in the Swiss Sector. Her body was airlifted while her male companion received treatment for severe shock.
Another fatal accident occurred in El Chorro, this time with a young Britishman. In this instance, the victim had fallen down the canyon. According to his companions, the accident occurred while doing the Via Ferrata route in the area known as ‘Puente del Mono’.
A Polish man broke his leg in October 2024 after falling on the Blue Line. The man was again rescued via air ambulance when he was found in an area that had a 300-metre vertical cliff.
