The second phase of expansion at the Marbella desalination facility was completed on May 31. It now has a capacity of 20 cubic metres per year.
Although it can’t nearly produce enough drinking water – the population needs around 90 hectometres per year – the expansion provides a layer of protection for the La Concepcion reservoir.
Acosol, operator of the desalination facility, is now in the process of securing a large contract for renovations to save energy.

After a two-year period of construction, the renovations are expected to reduce energy consumption by up to 30 percent.
They’re currently evaluating who to award the contract to, with a total value of €8.5 million.
Through the use of isobaric chamber type energy recuperators, improvements will be made in the system for pumping seawater, pre-treatment pumping, pumping product water and high-pressure pumping.

All this will help reduce energy consumption in the production process of desalinated waters.
The annual energy efficiency objective must be at least 1.40 kwh/m³, according to the technical specifications.
The work will need to be done in a manner that does not affect the daily operations of the plant.
