Costa del Sol has become cleaner and greener. New data shows a decrease in the amount collected of garbage across the region. In the first three month of 2025 77 358 tonnes of domestic waste were processed. This is 5% lower than in the same period last year.
Complejo Ambiental Costa del Sol manages the waste for the western Costa del Sol. This is good news as it indicates that residents are reducing their waste and recycling more.
Marbella was the city with the largest drop in general waste – down 21% from last year. Mijas and Istan saw similar improvements, but on a smaller scale.
Recycling has also increased. Plastic and packaging collections (yellow bins) increased by 4%, while paper and cardboard collections (blue bins) rose by 12%. Istan and Benahavis have reported the most significant improvements.
Glass recycling decreased by about 1% but in certain towns, such as Casares and Manilva, it increased dramatically.
Manuel Cardena said that these results showed the Costa del Sol was on the right track. “We are more aware that it’s important to properly separate our waste,” he said.
The region will be closer to achieving its goal of circular waste management, and a more sustainable future for all residents on the Costa del Sol.
