In 2024, the number of motor vehicles insured in Spain will reach 33,976,611, an increase of 1.71 percent compared with 2023. This figure is based off the averages for October, December and November. It comes from the records of insured vehicles (FIVA).

The average number on vehicles that circulate in the country increased by 572.194 units compared to 2023. From one quarter to another, the increase is 0.24%, which is 81,255 units more than the average for the third quarter (July-August-September) of the year.

FIVA collects information on all insured vehicles in Spain, whether they are cars, motorbikes or mopeds.

FIVA is a great tool to track the number of vehicles in the country. This file contains data on both registered vehicles as well as those that were deregistered.

The fourth quarter of 2018 saw 3,135,069 new vehicle registrations, and 3,047.417 deregistrations. The total is 87,652 (including all vehicle categories: cars, motorbikes and vans), a balance that is positive. The period between 1 October to 31 December saw a positive balance of 87,652.

Data show that growth in the insured stock in 2024 is higher than what was recorded in 2023. It’s the highest index of a fourth quarter in the last year. This is the 11th quarter in a row that the insured stock has increased, but the increase is less than previous quarters.

In recent years, the average age of cars in Spain has risen significantly and now exceeds the European average. In 2023, this age exceeded 14, which is an ageing of significant proportions. According to the Spanish Association of Automobile and Lorry Manufacturers (Anfac), in 2024 the average age for vehicles was 14.2 years, making it one of Europe’s oldest.

Anfac has stated that approximately half of 30 million vehicles in Spain will be 15 years old by 2023. This is a worrying statistic. According to the data provided by Anfac, in the past 12 months, for every car that was registered, 1.3 cars older than 10 were sold. This is a worrying trend, as it diverts market demand towards older vehicles, delaying the renewal of vehicle bodies and preventing compliance with emission reduction targets set by Europe.

DGT labels show that the number vehicles with a 0 label (zero emissions sticker) increased by 51.9%, while those with ECO labels grew by 31.1%. Nevertheless, these two categories only represent 5.7% of all vehicles in Spain. On the other side, vehicles with label “C” have grown by 6.1% over last year and now total 10,793,282 unit.

Vehicles without an environment label made up 29.4% and vehicles marked B were 29.8%. This totaled around 18.1 millions vehicles. The number of vehicles without an environmental label decreased by 2% in comparison to the previous years.
