Alhaurín el Grande has earned a prestigious spot as a founding member of “Red de Pueblos Gastronómicos de España” (Spain’s Gastronomic Villages Network), becoming the only representative from Malaga province and one of just three in Andalusia, alongside Baena (Córdoba) and Aracena (Huelva).
This national and global association brings together Spain’s most renowned villages in terms of their culinary excellence, heritage and tourism appeal. They aim to promote rural development and employment as well as sustainable opportunities, through a project which celebrates local flavours, traditions and growth.
Mayor Anthony Bermúdez announced the achievement at a press conference, pledging the town’s commitment to showcasing its gastronomic, cultural, and natural assets. With this membership, our goal is to showcase the excellence of our food, the quality and quantity of local products, and the outstanding hospitality sector. He said that we position ourselves as an excellent tourist destination not just for our cuisine, but also because of our culture and natural surroundings.
Twenty minutes from Mijas Pueblo, and overlooking the beauty of the Guadalhorce Valley, Alhaurín el Grande offers a sensory journey through its authentic, locally sourced cuisine. Traditional dishes like sopas cachorreñas, mojete, migas, and sopa hervía are created from ingredients farmed on their doorstep, presenting a humble yet exquisite culinary tradition. Wood-fired pancateto, Denomination of Origin Olives, artisanal Sausages and the unique Bollo de Aceite Pastries raise the town’s gastronomic profile.
Membership in the network brings unprecedented global visibility, including a well-funded media campaign, features on the official website (www.pueblosgastronomicos.com), and upcoming high-impact reports. The town will also participate in initiatives like “GastroRutas” and “GastroEventos”, which connect Spain’s regions through food, heritage, and tradition, guided by the network’s charming mascots, Fogón and Candela.
The project provides members with tools such as ongoing training, digitalisation and innovation, strategies for year round tourism and economic and social sustainable, as well partnerships with national- and international networks.
