Volcano warning in Spain: Scientists draft emergency plans to evacuate locals and tourists after ‘alarming’ and ‘intense’ days of seismic activity

SPAIN is preparing for a volcanic eruption following a series of ‘alarming’ seismic movements, it has emerged.

The La Palma volcano, on the Canary Islands, is beginning to show activity again, setting off alarm bells among experts and locals.

It comes just three years after its last eruption caused almost €850 million in damages, forced a mass evacuation and destroyed countless homes.

The volcano, part of the northwestern ridge of Cumbre Vieja, last exploded in 2021, in an eruption that lasted 85 days and wreaked havoc.

According to El Español, seismic movements recorded in the past few weeks have generated concern among geologists.

Over the past few days, activity in the crater has increased in both frequency and intensity.

Scientists warn these movements could be a sign that magma is moving towards the surface again, which could trigger a new eruption.

It is impossible to predict when it would erupt but emergency plans are already being prepared to protect the public and minimise damage.

Reports say evacuation plans are being reviewed and updated and that protocols are in place to protect locals and tourists.

According to El Español, the scientific community is on ‘high alert’ and drills are already being carried out.
