The Costa del Sol was paralyzed by a torrential rain and hailstorm Monday morning, following an orange alert from AEMET.
The warning is in effect until evening and is mainly affecting the Costa del Sol, Guardalhorce Valley, Malaga’s capital. The emergency services have received hundreds calls from people reporting flooding at their homes and places of business on the first floor. So far, there have only been minor injuries. The majority of damage has been done to vehicles and personal property.
When a woman tried to cross the underpass underneath the Cercanias commuter line in Torremolinos, she got stuck. She couldn’t leave her car by herself, but someone from the locality managed to help her get out of her car and into safety via the hatchback.
A family in Fuengirola was rescued by firefighters after driving through a tunnel to reach the castle from the shopping centre Miramar. A father, his two daughters aged 4 and 2 and their vehicle, which was waterlogged, needed help to exit.
Floodwaters down El Charcón stream dragged away a section of a wooden pedestrian bridge in Mijas Costa. According to council sources, despite the fact that it’s a wooden pedestrian bridge that runs parallel to the beach at its height, the bridge does not belong on the Coastal Path.
Snow is falling at higher elevations due to the storm that hit Malaga province on Monday. Snow has covered the highest peaks of Sierra de las Nieves National Park. The Torrecilla is its highest peak, which stands at 1,919 meters.
There is also intense snow falling in other areas, such as around La Maroma or the Sierras Tejeda. Almijara and Alhama are also affected.
