A 74-year-old windsurfer was rescued Thursday, January 30, by Salvamento Marítimo at about two and a half kilometres from the beach of Peñón del Cuervo, in Malaga capital.
The woman who alerted the emergency services after seeing the man from the coast had been drifting for several hours.
Around 2.30pm, the caller dialed 112. The caller said that there was a person in the water, who was moving away from him and waving his hands.
Salvamar Alnitak, the Malaga high-speed lifeguard vessel, was dispatched as soon as possible. The crew was able, in a matter minutes, to save the man who was exhausted and showed signs of hypoglycemia.
He said, “Once safe, I went out to practice windsurfing with another individual, who was able return to land.” However, in his case, despite having a lot of experience with this sport, he was unable to reach the shore when the wind stopped. The man was so exhausted that it was difficult for him to stand on the board.
He was brought to the Port of Malaga around 3.30pm, where health services were waiting. It was not necessary for him to be transferred to a hospital.
