Tunnel Linking Spain And Morocco Delayed Until 2040
Plans to build a tunnel connecting Punta Malabata in Morocco and Punta Paloma, near Cadiz, have been put on hold. There was hope that the 42km long tunnel would be finished in time for 2030’s World Cup. However, Spain’s Transport minister Oscar Puente has said the project is being delayed due to unforseen problems.
Study is now underway The complex geology of Gibraltar Straits is a complicated subject. The study of the Eurasian-African tectonic plate and the seismic activity along an underwater fault line are also being conducted.

The tunnel that connects Spain with Morocco would be 42 km long.
Travel time is 20 minutes
By 2040 the tunnel will only be used for rail travel. It will cover 42 km, including 30km tunnels submerged up to a depth of 475 metres. The trip would take about 20 minutes. A final budget hasn’t been determined, but experts believe the tunnel will cost up to €10 billion.
