Sad news in from Age Concern Marbella – San Pedro with the news that Tom Burns, the group’s first president, has passed away.

Carol Woolnoth, the current president of Age Concern Marbella & San Pedro, announced the bad news via an email message.

Carol writes, ‘For those who did not know him personally, I can tell you that he was the first president of Age Concern Marbella-San Pedro. He was one of the founding members of our branch along with Stephen Brooksbanks and Don Lessor. They are all gone now, but we still owe them a great debt for their courage in starting a branch for Marbella & San Pedro.

Tom, our first president was a man of great success and business experience. He was clear about the level of professionalism that he wanted in the charity he ran and tried to surround himself by others who shared his standards.

He was the president of our successful ball held at Melia Don Pere in 2019 which raised enough funds to help us deliver on our promises to older people in our community.

He often said, ‘The biggest problem in this area is the loneliness and poverty of older people. It was our mission to address that.

It is the basis of everything we do. We have everything from coffee mornings to meals, events at our community centre and coach trips.

Tom was an intelligent man who had integrity and compassion for people in difficult situations.

He was a mentor and a moderator. He inspired me and spoke with common sense, which is incredibly important when you need it. He was most importantly my friend and I will miss him.

Tom‘s journey on this earth has ended, but the impact he made will continue through those who remember him. I will always be reminded of his warmth, generosity and kindness.

We send our condolences and prayers to Conor, Peter and Paul’s extended family, as well as to their sons.
