The rooftop terrace of El Pilar in Estepona’s centre is home to a culinary gem, with flavours that are both alternative and delicate. This is the gem the town was waiting for.
Makako It is a temple to fusion cuisine, a fusion of influences and ingredients in the definitive Southeast Asian style. The exotic journey is a fusion of familiar flavours, colours and aromas with some pleasant surprises.
We didn’t start off well: Someone in the communication chain between the reception of the hotel and the top floor had mixed up our reservation times. They managed to get us a seat at the busy restaurant.
When the food arrived, I was able to get over my usual cynicism. We chose a flexible selection for sharing, starting with a cold edamame-hummus and finely sliced light and crunchy plantain chip. I was blown away by the taste and am eager to recreate it in my kitchen.
Makako spice ratio is perfect
I then made the General Tso in a delicious sauce. This dish was the most delicious of the night. I am usually put off by satay because it is often over-salted. But in this case there wasn’t a single grain of salt. The bang-bang Chicken Salad with Chinese noodles and Mint was a great accompaniment to the General Tso. It’s messy, fresh, light, and delicious.
The final treat was a beautiful Yuzu sorbet, which we had paired with a watermelon slice.
The bill was higher than I would normally pay at any seafront restaurant on this part of the coast. But it was not the case. The most pleasant surprise was this. Although the rooftop terrace of the Plaza de las Flores restaurant looked elegant, the price was still much lower than the prices at other restaurants in Estepona. I won’t reveal the total bill as we had a lot of drinks after.
