It’s quick, it’s free, it’s on your phone—and it’s got Spain in a right digital frenzy. Bizum is the most popular app to send instant payments via mobile between friends, families, and even your flaky friend. Never forget Their wallet. But behind the convenience, there’s a web of rules that could leave you red-faced—and potentially red-flagged by the taxman.
Spain’s favourite quick payment app
According to figures from the platform itself in early 2025, a whopping 25 million people in Spain now use it, sending cash zipping across mobiles faster than you can say “¿Me haces un Bizum?”.
Not just the occasional tenner. The app clocks up over 80 million transactions a month, with the average transfer falling somewhere between €30 and €60.
What is the fine print?
But while Bizum feels easy-breezy, there’s a financial firewall behind the scenes—and the limits are tight. Here’s what to expect in 2025:
- Minimum per transaction: €0.50
- Maximum per transaction: €1,000
- Daily send limit: €2,000
- Monthly send limit: €5,000
- Maximum number of operations per month: 60
- Limits on online purchases differ by bank
The banks can adjust these limits slightly.
Bizum bloopers – What happens when you take it too far?
If you push past these limits, the results can be headaches:
- Transaction Blocked
- Account frozen temporarily for verification
- Bizum is no longer accessible
- Banks could stop digital services
This is where it gets interesting Really? interesting. If you’re regularly sending or receiving large sums—or if something about your transactions smells fishy—Hacienda (Spain’s tax authority) might just start sniffing around.
Banks may have a legal obligation to report if you pass cash around like Monopoly money. Think about payments for undeclared employment, suspicious patterns, and split transactions designed to avoid detection.
According to Law 10/2010, the anti-money laundering law, banks are required to report:
- Transfers totalling over €10,000 annually
- Transactions that are fragmented in order to avoid limitations
- A suspicious economic activity that has no clear explanation
And no, Bizum won’t grass you up directly—but your You will not regret it.
Can you change your Bizum limits? Possibly. Avoid the rules? It’s unlikely.
Need to move money more quickly? Many banks allow you to temporarily increase your limits via an app. Some do it immediately, without the need to go into a bank. If you want to slip under Hacienda’s radar, then think twice. Spain’s financial watchdogs are used to it.
