Tonight, the Strawberry Moon will glow over the Costa del Sol. On June 11, this full moon will appear low and brightly, filling the sky with warm tones. You won’t be able to resist it.
It’s not really a “supermoon,” but its location near the horizon makes it seem larger and give it a beautiful orange-red hue. The Earth’s atmosphere scatters the blue light and only allows red tones to be seen by our eyes. What’s the best time of day to see it at? Right after sunset on June 10, when the moon peeks above the eastern horizon, casting a magical glow over Malaga‘s coastline.
Why is it called “Strawberry Moon?” The name is derived from Native American customs, which mark the start of strawberry harvest. In Europe, it’s called the Honey Moon, or Rose Moon, and is linked to the arrival of summer. It’s perfect for a romantic night under the stars.
For the best views, choose a spot that is dark and has a clear view to the east. Beaches like Nerja and hills near Mijas would be ideal. Binoculars are all you need to bring the craters of this volcano into sharp focus.
The next time that the moon will be this low in the skies is 2044. Grab a picnic and a blanket to enjoy the free nature show over the Costa del Sol.
