Torremolinos takes beach safety up a notch this summer. From June 1 to 30th September, a team of almost 40 lifeguards is on duty each day covering over seven kilometres. Professionals will monitor beaches such as Bajondillo and Playamar from 11am-8pm.
Beaches are also safer and more inclusive thanks to new technology. This year, real-time surveillance is one of the most important updates. Teams can monitor live sea conditions and crowd numbers from the central coordination point. This allows them to respond more quickly in case of an emergency.
The information points offer free GPS wristbands to families with young children and people with disabilities. These bracelets can be used to track someone quickly if they get lost or confused.
Two motorised mobility devices are also available to assist people with limited mobility in bathing. These upgrades can be easily booked through WhatsApp.
The team of lifeguards is supported by a fixed tower with first aid kit, a rescue vessel, two jet-skis, an emergency ambulance, and five Defibrillators. Two first aid stations have trained medical personnel and are permanent.
The flags used to indicate the sea condition now have visual markers that are accessible for people who are colour blind.
The mayor stated that the goal of Torremolinos is to make its beaches safer, inclusive, and ready for everyone to enjoy this summer.
