After suffering three burglaries in the past six month, a BRITISH pub-owner on the Costa del Sol demands better police presence.
This week, thieves broke into the Rose and Thistle restaurant in La Duquesa (Manilva) and stole several charity tins.
Simon Dearing of Simon Dearing Inc. said the thefts are part of a recent increase in thefts that has caused local business owners in the area to call for a more visible police presence.
Three people arrested earlier this week on suspicion of belonging to a robbery group were released on bail while the investigation continued.
Simon said to the Olive Press: “We had Guardia Civils here yesterday. They can’t do much.” The guardia civil did not take fingerprints as it was a public place and they would have been smudged.
They didn’t want to even test the large knife that they used to pry the fruit machine open. They broke through the main folding window, stole all of the charity tins we collect and a pot full of notes that we collect for our local children’s charity.
He said: “This must be heartbreaking, as our weekly quizzes help raise funds for this. The group also smashed a number of beer bottles and took some beers, confectionery. They also took a few beers and confectionary, smashed numerous beer bottles.

They used a corkscrew and a kitchen blade to try to break in to the fruit machine, but were unsuccessful. To me this shows they are very amateurs. The window was damaged and it cost money to repair. They also tried to recover the stolen charity funds.
Simon said there have been ‘numerous’ robberies in the area lately.
He stated: “I’m sure there are at least two that happened in the port last week, and more in Sabinillas.” In the last six month I have had three break-ins. A beer supplier is trying to get better police enforcement by circulating a petition. Maybe too little too late.”
