Fuengirola is once again participating in a national glass recycling campaign targeting the hospitality sector this summer, with the goal of winning the prestigious ‘Green Flag’ from Ecovidrio for the fourth year in a row.
The scheme that recognizes coastal municipalities who are committed to sustainable development was launched at Rincon de Los Verdiales Bar, an important spot in the local culture.
The campaign encourages restaurants, beachside chiringuitos and bars to recycle glass and adopt sustainable practices. Fuengirola competes against 181 coastal towns in Spain, 50 of which are located in Andalusia. Hugo Recio from Ecovidrio in Eastern Andalusia stressed the importance of supporting towns that have high summer tourism. Recio stated that the campaign was launching in Fuengirola for the sixth time. The goal is to encourage businesses to achieve specific sustainability and recycling criteria.
Ecovidrio’s environmental educators visit local establishments in order to collect data and provide guidance on their environmental performance. This data will contribute to the creation of a national report about sustainable practices in Spain’s hospitality sector.
Fuengirola Television will use posters and social media to promote this campaign. Residents and local businesses are encouraged to take part in the campaign, which builds on the community effort Fuengirola has already earned the Green Flag.
